Pause Sensor Firmware Upgrade Settings

Updated over a week ago

For the UXI sensors, all software updates are controlled by the UXI engineering team and are made to resolve support issues or add new features. No action is needed to keep your sensors up to date.

All software updates are peer-reviewed and undergo a rigorous QA process in our lab, which tests 80 sensors across various deployment scenarios. If the devices pass QA, the software is deployed to internal sensors for all HPE employees. If no issues are observed, the update is randomly deployed to a small percentage of sensors spread across the customer base. A few additional QA checks are completed, and then the update is deployed in a batched way to groups of randomized sensors. Integrity and software uptake is monitored closely to ensure stability. Because of the staggered deployment, some sensors can receive an update a few days earlier than others. At the end, all sensors across all customers run the same software.

Each sensor will periodically check for updates and new configurations. The update process is automatic and the sensor will download the update via ethernet, Wi-Fi or cellular (if available) the moment it is available, unless otherwise delayed by the end user.

The frequency of software updates for the sensor is typically every 3 to 5 weeks.

Pause Sensor Firmware Upgrade Settings

If you are in a critical period and want to pause any sensor software updates, an admin user can go to the Settings -> Account page and turn off automatic updates under the Firmware Upgrade Policy. Firmware upgrades can be delayed for a maximum of 60 days. During this time, you may define a Pilot Group of sensors to receive upgrades initially. This allows for small-scale testing before updates are deployed to your entire fleet.

It is generally not recommended to turn off automatic software updates. This feature is only intended to give you control during a brief critical period (for example, you may have a change freeze at the end of the year).

To see your sensor software version and whether the sensor is on the latest software release, you can go to the Settings -> Sensors page, and under the FIRMWARE VERSION column, you will see the last reported release number by the sensor and whether the number is up to date or upgrade pending. If it says upgrade pending, it is usually because the sensor is offline or powered off.

Note: We use the term firmware in the dashboard, but what we are actually referring to is the sensor software which comprises of everything the sensor uses to execute it’s tests and associate with your configured networks.
