Set-up Groups

Should there be additional sensors to add to your configuration, you will see them in the Settings > Location Management > Sensors:

Creating and Managing Groups

You can group sensors together on the dashboard to simplify management. A sensor can belong to no group or a single group only. There are many ways to group sensors, however, common options are by location, category, or network.  Setting up groups can be beneficial when using filters to drill down into specific sensors.  


To create a group, use the following steps:

1. Click the Settings (gear icon on the top right corner of the dashboard.)

If you are on the home dashboard page, you can access the Settings page by hitting the "s" key.

2. Click on the Sensors tab.

3. Click on the Group Management tab.

4. Click on the + Add Group button.

5. Type in a name and alias for the group in the Add Group window.

The alias is a two or three letter label that is a unique identifier for the group.

6. Click on the Add button.  The Group Management window will open.

7. Add or remove sensors to the group by selecting them from the lists on the Group Management window or by clicking on the sensors on the map.

8. Click on the Save button.

To edit a group, use the following steps:

1. Click the Settings

2. Click on the Sensors tab.

3. Click on the Group Management tab.

4. Click on the Manage button next to the group you want to edit.

5. Add or remove sensors to the group by selecting them from the lists on the Group  Management window or by clicking on the sensors on the map.

6. Click on the Save button.

To edit the group name or alias, or to delete a group, use the following steps:

1. Click settings

2. Click on the Sensors tab.

3. Click on the Group Management tab.

4. Click on the Pencil icon next to the group you want to edit or delete.

5. Edit the group name or alias in the Group Edit window or click on the Remove button.

On your dashboard, groups can be configured to bucket sensors together simplifying their management and viewing. How sensors are grouped is up to the user. Common groupings include by location, category, and network. A sensor can belong to no groups or to a single group and cannot span multiple groups.  Currently, our hierarchy set-up is done via support while we build self-managing groups.  

Hierarchical Sensor Groups

Sensors can be combined into hierarchical groups up to seven levels deep. This makes it easier to manage large complex deployments of sensors, especially if they are campuses or geographically distributed.  

Note: this is for visualization and filters only, this does not apply to configure tests or role-based access.  

You can quickly identify individual sensors versus sensor groups by the status strip icon in the Experience section on the main dashboard; a dot represents a single sensor, a stack of status strips represents a sensor group.  

You can quickly know the composition of the sensor group and a high-level of the status by hovering over a group in the Experience section (main dashboard view) that will pop up a display with these details: 

  • The name of the group

  • The total number of sensors in the group and the number in a particular state

  • A histogram of the status over the past 24 hours

  • An overview of ongoing alerts

 You can click on a sensor group to drill-down to see its sub-groups. The group-level indicator on the upper left of the dashboard shows the level being displayed. You can continue to drill down until you reach the last level, containing only sensors. As with the previous dashboard, clicking on an individual sensor takes you to its drill-down page. 

Hierarchical sensor groups let you combine sensors and manage large deployments easily, we are currently working on improving this feature!. 

The same navigation system works in the map view and grid view. Selecting a group in the map view automatically zooms the map in or out to see all the sensors in that particular group.
