Onboarding Your Sensor by Sharing Your Laptop's Internet Connection

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Your UXI sensors need to contact the UXI cloud to receive their initial configuration to start testing. All communication with the UXI cloud is initiated by the sensor.

For cellular-enabled sensors, although cellular is enabled on the device, coverage depends on agreements between Kore Wireless and the mobile service provider, as well as the physical surroundings of the sensor. We cannot guarantee cellular coverage.

When deploying the sensors, it’s best to have an unrestricted Ethernet port available as a backup. G-series sensors can also use the onboarding Bluetooth app for Android to get the initial configuration. If those options aren't working, as a last resort, you can use your laptop's internet connection to bring the sensor online.

Onboarding the Sensor by Sharing Your Laptop's Internet Connection

For this method, you will need a laptop with internet access, an Ethernet cable, and an Ethernet port on your laptop or an Ethernet adapter. This method may not work if your laptop or the network it's connected to is locked down. Connect your laptop to a network that has the best chance of reaching the internet.

The directions for sharing your network connection may vary depending on the operating system version.

The first step is to connect the Ethernet cable to your sensor and plug the other end into your laptop.

For Mac:

  1. Open System Settings > Sharing.

  2. Select Internet Sharing, but don’t enable it yet. Select the (i) to see the options menu.

  3. In “Share your connection from:” pick the interface that currently provides internet (for example: Wi‑Fi).

  4. In “To computers using:” check the dongle/ethernet interface name (for example: USB LAN 10/100/1000).

  5. Now go back and enable the box next to Internet Sharing. The Mac will act as a DHCP/NAT gateway and assign an IP to the device.

You may need to wait ~10 minutes for the sensor to onboard. You won't see the status lights change immediately, but the LED will eventually go to solid white if the process completes, and you should see data in the UXI dashboard a few minutes after that.

For Windows:

  1. Open the traditional Windows Network Connections control panel
    - Go to Start -> Run (Or Press Windows key + R), type ncpa.cpl, press Enter.

  2. The Network Connections window opens and shows all network adapters.

  3. Locate:

    • The adapter with an active internet connection (likely Wi-Fi).

    • The USB Ethernet adapter (may be called “Ethernet”/"Ethernet 2" or something similar). Both adapters should show a status (e.g., “Connected” for internet adapter, “Network cable unplugged” or “Enabled” for USB Ethernet if connected device on).

  4. In Network Connections, right‑click the adapter providing internet (Wi-Fi or cellular dongle).

  5. Click Properties.

  6. Open the Sharing tab.

  7. Check the box:
“Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection.”

You may need to wait ~10 minutes for the sensor to onboard. You won't see the status lights change immediately, but the LED will eventually go to solid white if the process completes, and you should see data in the UXI dashboard a few minutes after that.
